Roof top protest 21/10/09.
11/13/2009 3:11:57 PM
(Moved from the front page to archive)
Early in the morning of the 29th of October Two people entered the Odeon building in Bradford and unveiled a banner saying
'Save the Odeon'
along the rooftop facing Princes Way.

It is stated in an article on the Indymedia website
(
http://northern-indymedia.org/articles/274)
that:
The Odeon building is an intrinsic part of Bradford's heritage yet the council have decided to approve its demolition. This is despite the desolation seen in Bradford city centre, a key example is the Westfield development which has been left as a gaping hole in the heart of the city. The Bradford populous have little faith in the gentrification of the cityscape and came out in force to 'Hug the Odeon' in 2007.

The banner drop today comes only days before a protest in Centenary Square this Saturday at 12noon.

Come out in force and show Bradford council that YOU care about this city even if they do not. See you on Saturday 31st October 12 noon Centenary Square, Bradford.

TWO NEW BORG FILMS FOR 2009
1/17/2009 1:02:37 AM

We have just uploaded two new films onto YouTube...

The first is a short but sweet visual record of some of the original New Victoria era features that still survive inside the Odeon, including the ballroom ceiling and auditorium circle front.

Please bear in mind that most of this footage was captured in absolute darkness, but it is still quite wonderful!!!

The second film is the long-awaited "A Question For Maud Marshall". All we will say about this mini documentary at this stage is simply click on the link and watch it!

A Welcome Letter From English Heritage
11/22/2008 3:36:20 PM
The DCMS may have recently upheld their decision to not grant listed building status on the Odeon following further advice from English Heritage, but the smug grins of Yorkshire Forward and Langtree Artisan were surely wiped off their faces when the views within a letter from Trevor Mitchell of English Heritage (submitted to the Bradford Planning Office) was published in the Telegraph & Argus today.

The letter not only objects to the complete demolition of the Odeon, but also opposes the planning application for New Victoria Place on the grounds that the scheme would "damage the conservation area"!!!

So, in a week when Jan Anderson (YF) and Glyn Turner (LA) had earlier publicly rejoiced in the decision not to list the Odeon, how wonderful it was to learn that Trevor Mitchell of English Heritage had told the Telegraph & Argus: “It has been our view that, although it’s a good building, it does not reach the national standards of special architectural or historical interest to warrant it being listed. However, that doesn’t mean it’s a worthless building with no value at all. It has local value as a landmark on the skyline and a community value in that many thousands of people used it when it was open.”

Anyway, the English Heritage letter is available to read on the Bradford Planning Office website which also containing all of the documents and objection letters relating to both planning applications but here's a direct link so you can read Trevor Mitchell's letter in full for yourself:

So Who Has Attempted To Wreck The Ballroom?
11/4/2008 11:16:14 PM

BORG are aware of the fact that the final Urban Explorers to enter the Odeon to take photos did so the day before the 24 hour security presence was installed to the rear of the building... and not a million miles away from that handy "open door" that had afforded easy access to a select few.

Here is an image of Odeon 3 (the former ballroom) that was taken during that final week in March 2008...

The carpet and seats look absolutely fabulous - especially when you consider the fact that the building had been closed for almost eight years at that point. The decorative pillars of the old ballroom are standing proud in all of their 1930 splendour. The room still holds treasured memories for so many Bradfordians.

Not long after it was discovered that contractors were to enter the Odeon in May 2008 to hunt for asbestos (er, didn't BCR have a report that allegedly stated where it was? Why hunt again? Anyway...) Other contractors were due to undertake a structural survey (again, didn't Ove Arup do a structural survey in 2004 for BCR? Ah well...)

As a result, several people contacted Yorkshire Forward to gain assurances that nothing nasty would happen to any of the original features inside the building. This was particularly important in light of the fact that the DCMS had just received two appeals cases, which even now (4th Nov 2008) could still result in theatre experts gaining access. Here are some of the responses various people received from Yorkshire Forward to put their minds at rest on a number of issues:

I can inform you that Yorkshire Forward have no intention of damaging the building in anyway” - Jan Anderson (9th July 2008)

“Yorkshire Forward made a commitment to Bradford Metropolitan District Council that we would not do anything fundamental to the structure of the building while these listing processes were underway. That remains the case.”  - Trevor Shaw (29th August 2008)

Mark Nicholson of BORG was also assured over the telephone by a Yorkshire Forward minion that the works would be "non-intrusive" and nothing would be damaged...

And we can trust Yorkshire Forward, can't we?

Just take a look at this image below (taken in either September or October 2008) which was discovered deep within the documents relating to the application to demolish the Odeon. It shows the exact same section of wall as seen in the colour pic above, but the blue drapes have been pulled away to reveal more of the ballroom decoration.

Remember, there has been 24 hour security on the site keeping the public out and the only persons gaining entry to the Odeon's interior have been those contractors commissioned by either Yorkshire Forward or Langtree Artisan...

Some loathsome wretch has smashed one of the wooden pillar coverings clean off the wall. A fragment of it is leaning against a cinema chair in the aisle! BORG supporter Andrew Heyes reported that at the time of the asbestos survey he saw contractors entering the Odeon carrying mallets and sledge hammers...

After viewing the YouTube film that already highlights their neglect of the building with the cut pipes, one has to ask what else could Yorkshire Forward possibly do to destroy not only people's memories (particularly of the ballroom) but the classic architecture within? Oh we forgot! They want to demolish the Odeon!!!

Don't let them - get your objections in fast! (Details on our homepage)

(ps Don't worry - the pillar covering can be replicated and restored as it is only made of wood , but that's not the bloody point, is it?)

New Victoria Place - Inappropriate For Princes Way
11/2/2008 12:26:02 AM

Here are a few photos of the display model of New Victoria Place currently on exhibition at Jacobs Well.

Each image depressingly shows just how impoverished the Alhambra will be without the twin domes of the Odeon... and how the lumbering hulk of New Victoria Place will completely overshadow it
If planning permission is ever granted to permanently deface this particular streetscape then Bradford really is in trouble.

Please go to our homepage now and get all of the details you need to object to this madness - you know it makes perfect sense!

Yorkshire Forward Perform a clean up operation at the Odeon!
