Some of you may have seen last nights Telegraph & Argus article on the proposed 'New Victoria Place' development. Well perhaps it should have read more like this:
Will Kilners report in today's T&A could have been equally accurate and certainly more meaningful had it been given a more balanced slant and stated ------
Langtree who were awarded the Design Competition in Aug 2006 anticipate, but are not certain, that work will start on New Victoria Place in 2010 and be finished in 2015, representing an optimistic gestation period of 9 years
By comparison 500 Bradford craftsmen started building the original New Victoria in May 1929 and it opened in Sept 1930
The Langtree build will take 5 years as the three blocks will be built sequentially rather than concurrently in order to minimise capital outlay and hopefully provide on going cash flow.
The exhibition at the Great Northern was attended by 150 Bradfordians and 421 viewed it on line. Together this totalled 0.16%of the Bradford electorate from which 90 people who equated to 0.025% were interested enough to fill in the response forms whilst the other 481 could not be bothered.
The feedback from these 90 individuals was considered to be sufficiently representative to directly influence the planning application subsequently submitted. Their views were that 74 wanted a public performance space and believed that restaurants would be of benefit, whilst 71 agreed that shops were needed. What the remainder of the 349,910 members of the electorate thought about it was not found out, but they certainly did not grasp the opportunity to show their support for more purpose built offices, apartments and possibly Bradford's tenth hotel.
